The 2021 New Year Plant Hunt will run from Friday 1st to Monday 4th January. We won’t be promoting any group Hunts this year and it’s essential that you follow local Covid-19 restrictions. Please check the guidance for your area before you plan your Hunt and again just before you set out. Stay safe!

Getting started

The New Year Plant Hunt app is very easy to use - it allows us to process your finds quickly so that they appear immediately on the results page.

The app can be used on your phone while you're out in the field or on your computer once you're back home.

Before you set out

First plan your route

Where you go is entirely up to you – you can pick your own route – but the crucial thing is to make sure that you are following local Covid-19 restrictions. Check the guidance for your area before you start planning your route and check again just before you set out, in case there have been any changes.

To keep everyone's list comparable we ask that you limit your recording to a maximum of three hours and to follow these instructions.

Even if you’re planning to use your phone to record your finds, we recommend that you take a pencil and notebook or a BSBI recording card with you as a backup. If the app doesn't work properly for you once you’re out in the field then it would be frustrating if you couldn't record your finds!

If you are using the app on your phone, download the form by visiting the page before you set out (while you still have a strong internet connection). You'll then be able to continue to record while offline. Check that everything is working before you leave the house.

Have fun recording flowers

Using the app on your phone means that you can record your New Year Plant Hunt finds as you walk. You’ll be able to add photos and automatically include accurate grid-references using your phone's GPS. The recording form was designed for use on a phone and it’s very user-friendly!

If you run into any problems, you can email the NYPH team at nyplanthunt@bsbi.org or phone us on 07725 862957. We'll be here throughout the hunt, ready to help you.

What if I don't find anything?

People are often surprised by how many flowers they find, but in some parts of the UK and in particular habitats finding anything in bloom can be a huge challenge. Lists with few or even no results are just as important as long lists. If you have searched and found no flowering plants then your result is still valuable and we want to hear about. Please send us an email stating where you went and we'll include your null result in our analysis.
